Utilizzando il Telescopio Nazionale = Galileo=20 dell'Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, in = funzione=20 nell'Isola di La Palma =E8 stato individuato un = nuovo=20 pianeta attorno alla stella HD219542B
Per la prima volta, un gruppo di = ricerca formato=20 da astronomi italiani (nella foto) ha individuato un = pianeta=20 extrasolare con la stessa massa di Saturno. La ricerca = di=20 pianeti che ospitano la vita =E8 uno dei grandi = obiettivi=20 dell'astronomia di questo secolo. A questo scopo sia = l'Agenzia=20 Spaziale Europea la NASA hanno intrapreso programmi di = ricerca=20 a lungo termine. E il primo passo =E8 la scoperta di = altri=20 sistemi planetari, oltre che la piena comprensione dei = loro=20 meccanismi di formazione.

Ma la rivelazione di = un=20 pianeta extrasolare richiede tecniche molto = sofisticate. Si =E8=20 quindi dovuto attendere il 1995 perch=E9 un gruppo di = astronomi=20 svizzeri, guidati da Michel Mayor e Didier Queloz, = annunciasse=20 la scoperta del primo pianeta orbitante attorno ad una = stella=20 diversa dal Sole.

Da allora, sono stati = scoperti circa=20 un centinaio di pianeti extrasolari. Le loro = caratteristiche,=20 spesso sorprendenti, richiedono una drastica revisione = delle=20 attuali teorie di formazione planetaria basate sulla = sola=20 conoscenza del nostro Sistema Solare. I teorici, = quindi,=20 attendono che si aggiungano sempre nuovi casi per = migliorare i=20 modelli e gli osservativi fanno a gara per dar loro il = materiale su cui lavorare, ovvero grandezza, massa, = distanza=20 dalla stella di un numero sempre maggiore di=20 pianeti.

Finora l'astronomia italiana era = rimasta fuori=20 da questo ambito di ricerca. Ora, grazie al Telescopio = Nazionale Galileo dell'Istituto Nazionale di = Astrofisica=20 (INAF), in funzione da qualche anno nell'isola di La = Palma, e=20 del suo spettrografo ad alta risoluzione SARG = (realizzato=20 dagli osservatori astronomici di Padova, Catania, = Palermo e=20 Trieste), un gruppo di astronomi di Padova e Catania, = guidato=20 da Raffaele Gratton (Osservatorio di Padova, INAF), ha = scoperto un nuovo pianeta attorno alla stella=20 HD219542B.

'E' il primo, si spera di una lunga = serie,=20 per l'Italia'. Dice Silvano Desidera, giovane = astronomo=20 padovano fra i protagonisti della scoperta: 'Il = pianeta che=20 abbiamo rivelato ha la massa di Saturno, ma =E8 ad una = distanza=20 dalla sua stella intermedia tra quella di Mercurio e = quella di=20 Venere dal Sole. Abbiamo trovato un pianeta dove ci=20 aspettavamo di trovarlo perch=E9 precedentemente = avevamo notato=20 che la stella mostrava segni di presenza di materiale=20 planetario'.

'La scoperta - aggiunge Francesco = Marzari,=20 teorico padovano esperto nei meccanismi di formazione = di=20 pianeti - =E8 particolarmente interessante trattandosi = di un=20 pianeta relativamente piccolo rispetto a quelli finora = osservati. Potrebbe essere simile ai pianeti esterni = del=20 Sistema Solare, che sono composti da un nucleo solido = ed un=20 involucro gassoso. A parit=E0 di massa, il suo raggio = dovrebbe=20 tuttavia essere maggiore di quello di Saturno in = quanto la=20 vicinanza alla stella induce temperature elevate sulla = sua=20 superficie'.

La ricerca del gruppo di Gratton = prosegue;=20 da tempo vengono osservate oltre un centinaio di = stelle allo=20 scopo di rivelare la presenza di pianeti=20 orbitanti.
